Is Your HR Tech Delivering Real Value or Just Cutting Costs?
In the dynamic realm of modern business, HR technology, particularly Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms, has become a cornerstone for organisations aiming to streamline operations and curtail expenses. However, a recent survey conducted by Information Services Group (ISG) casts a spotlight on a compelling conundrum: while the majority of enterprises report substantial cost reductions from their HR tech investments, a significant gap exists in translating these savings into perceivable business value. This blog ventures into the heart of this paradox, unraveling the intricate layers behind the impressive cost-efficiency statistics and the elusive nature of their strategic impact.

In today’s fast-paced business environment, organisations are constantly seeking ways to improve efficiency and reduce costs. HR technology, particularly Software as a Service (SaaS) platforms, has been at the forefront of this transformation. However, a recent survey by Information Services Group (ISG)reveals a concerning trend: while most enterprises achieve significant cost savings froms their HR tech investments, demonstrating their real business value remains a challenge.

The Cost-Saving Reality
The 2024 Survey on Industry Trends in HR Technology and Service Delivery highlights an encouraging statistic: 87% of organisations have realised at least a 10% reduction in total HR administration costs thanks to their HR SaaS platforms. Impressively, 20% of these companies have seen cost savings of 40% or more. This indicates a strong initial return on investment (ROI) in terms of cost efficiency.
The Value-Realisation Gap
Despite these cost savings, the survey uncovers a gap in perceived business value from HR tech investments. Only 46% of organisations can demonstrate clear business value from adopting HR SaaS technology, marking an 18 percentage point decline from 2022. This drop suggests that while HR technologies are effective in cutting costs, their contribution to strategic business objectives is less apparent.
Understanding the Decline
Stacey Cadigan, a partner at ISG, suggests that increased expectations from HR buyers play a role in this decline. Companies are no longer content with just an enhanced user experience; they demand functionalities that lead to operational efficiencies, reduced cycle times, and improved employee retention. Additionally, the survey points to a failure in adapting HR business processes and service delivery models to new systems as a significant factor in this decreased value realisation.
The Role of Business Processes
The survey emphasises the importance of evolving business processes and service delivery models to fully leverage HR SaaS capabilities. However, many organisations face barriers in this transformation, including the time and support required for such changes. This challenge is compounded by the impacts of the pandemic, shifting business priorities, and workforce challenges, which have slowed the transition to HR SaaS for some.
Future Outlook and Strategic Decisions
Despite these challenges, there’s a silver lining. The current talent shortage is pushing organisations towards HR SaaS solutions to improve their talent attraction, development, and retention strategies. Furthermore, there’s a growing interest in shared services and outsourcing as methods to enhance service quality and support HR functions, indicating a shift towards more strategic HR management approaches.

While HR technologies, particularly SaaS platforms, offer undeniable cost-saving opportunities, their potential to drive substantive business value is still underutilised. The challenge lies not in the technology itself but in aligning it with strategic business objectives and evolving HR processes to fully leverage its capabilities.
